My Facebook is back up and running, but only for a bit. I didn't think I needed to give anyone an excuse for deleting my social networking life...but apparently when you pull a 180 on people, they get freaked out. I had so many missed calls and texts that day from people asking what they did wrong and why I deleted them as a friend. Sorry! Facebook really is a black hole I suppose. I still need email addresses, because (FAIR WARNING) I am going to delete my facebook account. Eventually. No one did anything wrong... I just don't really want it right now. At least that is the excuse I am giving to those of you who need one.

Life is good. I am happy and productive and excited to graduate. Love you all and I would love to see my friends in person more often if possible!!

I am sooooo grateful for sweaters! I have quite the sweater collection building up lately. I've been told that I am a "fall" girl and I cannot deny it. As much as I love summer...there is nothing better than colorful leaves, a cool brisk breeze, green grass, and a bit of snow on the mountains. I am a boots and sweater type girl. :) I'm also grateful for my camera. I LOVE taking pictures.

Today I am thankful for my Down comforter and for math. I LOVE math. I never thought I would say those words...but I do. Math is consistent and trustworthy. My blanket is inviting and warm every single night.

For "family" night... we went to Cornbelly's Corn Maze. After 8pm everything turned ghostly. :) I will share one funny moment from last night...
We were walking through a small haunted maze, I was holding my boys hand while keeping a close eye on the girl who was walking closely behind me. (She has seizures so I was concerned b.c of the strobe lights.) After a scary clown/freak/murderer man popped out and scared us...I heard this girl start breathing heavily. The lights flashed off for a moment so I spun around and grabbed her shoulders to see if she was alright, and when they flashed back on...I was NOT holding the shoulders of the girl in our group...but the shoulders of the scary clown/freak/murderer man. I screamed and ran for it, burying my face in my dates sweater. This mans face was priceless. A little shocked that someone had grabbed him and pulled him close. I keep laughing about this moment and I think it will be a joke within our social circle for awhile.

Alrighty, time to focus in Biology. :)

Week 2 without a facebook account = amazing. I got a few texts that said, "Miss social networking deleted her twitter and facebook? How odd!" Well, I just needed to disconnect from the world and say, "As interesting as your lives are... I am going to shut the computer and go live mine." Facebook is a black hole for me. I work on it then come home and enter what I consider to be my virtual college social life. But, the only reason it ended up that way is because I made it so. It is easy to take five minutes and write on a friends wall to see how they are doing, or to check out their most recent photo uploads to see what is new rather than giving that friend a very deserved call. I am not going all anti-facebook on you all...but I need to take a large step back from it for now.
So, since I deleted my account, I've had more time to do the things that I need to do and want to do. I've been practicing my guitar more and giving my classes the study time they require. I've received more phone calls this week than ever before and gone to dinner and lunch with friends more than ever before. Facebook may be a cheap way to socialize but it also cheapens friendships by using it as a main social resource.

I spent today inside. It was a beautiful day...but I stayed in and gave my home the deep cleaning it desperately needed, caught up on laundry, homework, and talked to a few old friends on the phone. It is amazing what you can find to do when you do not rely on facebook to relieve boredom. I check my email and shut my computer. This may sound silly to those of you who have your facebook usage under control, but again...I work ON facebook and then I am in school the rest of the evening, so at times facebook was my only friend interaction/mid-study break (that lasted a few hours...oops.)

I'm laying here trying to find the energy to finish my math homework. Applied for graduation today, work, school, photoshoot, more homework... My days seem to mimic each other with only minor changes within each. The semester is passing quickly and I am trying my best to keep up with the tasks I have given myself thanks to my inability to relax. I feel lazy when I relax...thinking of everything that needs to be done. I don't have time to read books that do not associate with the classes I have enrolled myself in. No leisure reading. It takes me months to read even a magazine as I fold the corner of an interesting article and return to my self-given obligations and duties. I overloaded myself this semester. I will be the first to say it. Reminding myself to breathe regularly, and checking my to-do list every few minutes...as if another task may appear without my knowing. I check the little boxes by each task all through the day, and cannot sleep until each task has been taken care of. Right now, as I type, I am thinking-"Laundry...out of the dryer, Dishes...need to go in the wash...Jeans, do I have clean ones for tomorrow? No. Dangit. Guitar, I still need to practice tonight. Math, why am I not doing it right now? I have 30 problems left and a test tomorrow. Boyfriend, wish I was with him right now." My mental checklist goes on and on.
I know I will look back at these posts and laugh. I know there will come a day when I remember these days and thank myself for all of my hard work.

A new thought just popped into my head and heart... I never thank myself. A girl in church yesterday mentioned that she was taught by a mentor to thank the moon and the sun...out-loud. To hold a conversation with the moon and the sun. Her conversation with the moon began awkwardly, and ended in tears and words of thanks for lighting the darkest hours. Her conversation with the sun began quietly as she lay on the warm sidewalk at her favorite park. Soaking in the sun, she thanked it for warming her. She lay still and listened to the wind and the birds. Stillness. Love that concept. What about thanking ourselves? What would that conversation sound like? I might try it out sometime and let you know how it goes. ;) I suppose that is a form of meditation. Not so weird. Right now, I want to thank myself for taking a minute to get these thoughts out of my head so that I can get back to my studies. ha...okay, seriously, I want to thank myself for taking guitar lessons as I have always wanted to do. For getting braces, because I always wanted a pretty smile. For letting love in-although I've been hurt deeply. For going back to school after a 7 year break (although those 7 years are filled with incredible experience in the marketing and business industry of which I do not regret). Lastly, for participating in church activities all summer--which led me to making life long friendships.

Enough writing for tonight. I hope you are all doing what you can to absorb each day and that you are continually giving yourselves greater challenges and goals to reach towards.

Today Jenna let me know that I have been horrible about updating my blog (Love you, lol). Here is a quick update- and for those of you who have requested more info--I will be calling you. :)

School is going well. Still trying to balance school and work and what I have of a social life. Still spending a lot of time with my nose in the books--but I am almost done with school which will bring greater happiness to my life than any mocktail party. (...right?)

Boyfriend... yes. I have been dating one of my best friends since June and we are now officially official. Facebook official, in fact. We love each other quite a bit...and I think having spent much of 2009/2010 as JUST FRIENDS (legitimately JUST friends) has actually made us closer than any relationship I've had before.
So? What happened?
The short version: We have been good friends for awhile/he was my home-teacher, talked every night until late, hung out often and talked about our recent/past relationships, life in general, etc. Neither one had really considered ACTUALLY dating...I admit I thought he was pretty cute at times, but I had a boyfriend so it was never an option. May- He was tagged in some pics on Facebook and I looked through them. I realized at that moment that I had never looked at his facebook pictures before. I browsed through some of the good times from the previous semester and found a picture of him that made me smile. I thought, "He is so cute and sweet to me, I love him..."..."wait, shut up, did I just think that?"
June- I told him I thought he was cute...and that I thought I might be interested in maybe kinda sorta maybe trying to sort of...date? He was surprised. Agreed. Transition was easy but interesting...and tada! We are together.

Really, those are the only bits of breaking news in my life right now. I moved into a new home with a roommate that I ADORE. We have a lot of fun together.
I will try to post more often rather than giving monthly updates. :)

I noticed a common theme while looking back on several previous blog posts. A lack of depth. I have been posting some pretty lame updates to my blog as of late. Who really reads blogs anymore though? Maybe I am crazy, but sitting down with a pen and paper is actually refreshing to me. I type quite a bit at work, school, facebook, chat sessions, etc. and sometimes miss the feeling of actual paper beneath my finger tips. I suppose I haven't had much to say the past few weeks.
Last night I went to dinner in Denver with a good friend of mine who said something profound that opened my eyes. "I feel like I know myself now--I am finally the person I have always wanted to become." I stopped for a moment and processed her comment. Then agreed. I also feel like I know myself and believe that I am finally becoming the girl I have always wanted to be. I am dressing the way I want to, behaving the way I want to, and believing in the things I want to believe in. I guess that means I am finally growing up. Happy regardless of my surroundings.
Another wise comment from a friend this week--"No one who has accomplished great things ever went without moments of boredom. In fact, some of the greatest talents sprouted from moments of down time...where they had nothing better to do than to think, create, explore."

It has been raining just about every day here. The rain is beautiful and I do love the way the mountains look right now--but I am in need of some sunshine therapy. Life is great right now. New place. Great roommates. No school. Loving my job.

The updates might get shorter and shorter because I have decided to start reflecting in my own private journal. That's right--pen and paper style.
I've been doing lunch dates with friends--rather than facebook messaging them.
Calling friends up rather than texting them.
And taking a more sincere interest in the needs of others over my own.
Today I had a "wellness day" where I basically just did everything I wanted to do. ...and I don't feel like writing right now...so I am going to turn off my computer and go play my guitar. You know, develop a talent or something like that.

Me--"ya...wait, ummm I think your head-lights are turned off..."

We had to stop driving because we both fell forward in laughter. We felt like the biggest airheads on the planet. That was a dang fun trip. I'm just a little tinsy bit excited for summer, freedom, warm weather, etc. Let the countdown begin.

I was able to go to General Conference today with my best friend and his family. Both sessions, actually. :D My favorite part of conference is singing with the choir. Music has always been my main means of communication with the spirit.
Here are a few things I jotted down today:

Peace, joy, and happiness are available to those who properly prepare...
(I missed the last part of this, but I liked where it was going!! :)

And the rest of the time I was so deep in thought I forgot to write anything down. I feel enlightened and like the hole in my heart/spirit has been filled.

::Side note:: I just got off the phone with my mom..., and I just have to say that moms are so incredible. When things are going great I tend to forget to check in at home, but when I hit a rough patch--my mom is always there with open arms and words of comfort.

I want to share that I have a testimony of prayer and of service. When God trusts us and knows that we will do as He asks--He will bless us with the opportunities to serve, to lift up, to share our talents and abilities, and to provide for those around us who are in need. Although, at times we must ask for those opportunities, I have a testimony that He will always provide them as there is a lot of work to be done. He needs us to be available and ready to serve so that when one of His children are in need--the instruments are at hand to assist Him in his glorious work. Sometimes we don't know why we meet the people we do, why we go through the experiences and trials that we do, or why we are counseled in the ways that we are. But, I believe that all of these experiences are for a great purpose and when the time comes for us to share our talents, abilities, and/or wisdom with others--we will be blessed for allowing God to work through us as instruments to provide the needed care for His sons and daughters.
I am grateful to be a part of a church that encourages children to become more well rounded, yet fine tuned. There are so many talented people within the church who are constantly striving to become better. I know that the ultimate goal is that of eternal happiness. I've been so happy that I've felt weak before--so I can't imagine what feeling overwhelmingly happy and at peace for all eternity will be like, but it is something that I am striving for.
I also have a testimony that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet. I actually felt a confirmation of this at a Christmas devotional last year when President Monson walked into the conference room.
I have read the Book of Mormon, I know that it is true, and I like the way I feel when I read its words of wisdom. I am grateful for everything that I have.

I played Volleyball tonight! wooo. It was good to be on a court again...but I haven't really played in a LONG time, so it was a bit awkward when my first serve didn't make it over the net. :)
That's okay. I hadn't warmed up at ALL and after a two hour work out yesterday I am not feeling light and flexible to say the least. Since my concussion, I have had a hard time jumping and making quick sudden moves--but I feel like I am getting better. Some kind of healing taking place here!

So, today was April Fools day. I had a few pranks pulled on me--that I (of course) fell for. Even though I KNEW it was April 1st. grrr!

General Conference is this weekend. It always comes when I need it most. I am excited to sit down and tune into what our leaders have to say. Always inspiring.

This week has been amazing. I am pumped for finals!!
Only 3 more weeks in this semester! :D I am SO ready for a bit of freedom. Ready, set, go.

This time last year I was preparing for my big move to Germany. :)
Each day was more exciting than the last. This year I am making small goals to look forward to. If I get good grades this semester--I am going to spoil myself with two items that I've had my eye on for awhile.
I am not sure why this semester has been harder on me than previous semesters, but it has been a struggle. I feel so blessed to be where I am right now. I have the most incredible roommates that a girl could ask for. We have a lot of fun together.
This spring break we went on a roommate trip to a small town near Vegas. We sun bathed and relaxed under palm trees all weekend. I was able to finish my homework, get some color, and make some of the funniest and most outrageous memories with my friends. Dare I say that life is good?
I went to the Jazz game with a boy who had floor seats. We sat behind/with the players. Don't be jealous... Kyle Korver smiled at me.
Life is sooo crazy busy right now. I feel like I overloaded myself with tasks, but I have been able to get everything done so far.

Dear God,
I wanted to give you a few reasons as to why I love you so much.

1. Even when I pull my hand away--you continue to reach.
2. You never go away. No matter what.
3. You let me know you are here with me and listening.
4. You are interested in my life, and you want to help me better myself.
5. You are my best friend. I want to marry my best-friend--therefore I must find someone who allows you to live through them.
6. You bless me each day with small and large things. I recognize these blessings and sincerely appreciate them.

I remember writing this and I remember why I wrote it. Overall this year was one that solidified friendships, my testimony, and increased my determination/reach for the stars.

Today I locked myself in my room for about 6 hours in order to finish 5 essays for my Philosophy class. In between essays I was able to get my laundry done, spend time with my girl friends, actually eat a bit, and later found time to make hot cocoa and cuddle up with the sweetest boy I know next to our lit up Christmas tree (mmm!), before getting back to the books.

K- Note to self; Never have the person you are dating, (...especially if they are very smart, graduated from BYU Marriott School, good with grammar and writing (and really really good looking)), edit your papers unless you are a GREAT writer. If I was brave enough to post my essay on here with all of the edits he made with the "review feature" in Word, I think you would see what I mean and laugh as hard as I did when I saw my "suggestions."
Really this was EXTREMELY helpful and I am grateful to be dating someone who is willing to take the time to do things like that for me. :) (eh?)

I have about 10 math problems left before I am DONE for the semester. That wasn't so bad at all! For those of you have known me for awhile you know that I have a pretty serious math phobia. (Yet I am studying bio-mech. engineering??) Why am I doing this to myself again...?

Regardless, I feel like I have discovered peace within myself the past few months. I have received closure on the things I needed closure in, I have grown very close to the church and solid in the things that I know, I am learning to really stand up for myself, and I am doing well in school. I may actually pull of a 4.0 again this semester. (Depending on if my professor likes those edits made to my paper!:)
Going to school full time and working full time this semester was overwhelming, but totally do-able. I am excited to do this all over again next semester!

Only 3 more school days left this semester!!
Counting down the days until Christmas.

New Moon is worth seeing. I still haven't read the books, and I am pretty confident that I will never read the books...but it was a good movie regardless.

I feel like a switch has flipped inside of me. Something woke me up to reality this month and I have realized many good and important things. Anyways, I am still working on launching my website. I guess my book needs to be finalized before I can do that though eh?

Apparently I am pretty competitive. :) We had a blast making soup, playing wii, and watching The Office.

Roommates and I did a lil' shopping today and the nice lady at Nordstrom practically MADE me buy this lip stick. I am going to try it out for awhile. :)

It snowed today!!!

So, tonight was a BLAST...where was my camera?
A group of us went to a freaking freaking sweet cabin up in the canyon and played Nurf wars inside the house. The teams were split into two and Team 1 started on one half of the cabin and we (Team2) started on the back half (ps...I think we counted 40 beds in this cabin...it was sick)...
We lost but I have to say that I was the last person standing in every single round!!
After we played our game...we went down a few levels (there is an elevator...) and hung out in the theator room and while half of the group watched "Taken" the others played ping pong and air hockey.
We THEN enjoyed some Stephens Hot Chocolate ...because we WERE hanging out in the Stephens cabin.

I needed this weekend of fun before the final weeks of school hit.

I am happy to announce that I have begun planning my next adventure. As of right now I am trying to decide between Italy and Spain. I already have my travel group lined up.
I know I keep saying this...but life is really really good right now! I have never been so happy.

This fall is becoming one of the best I have had in a very very long time. If you could see what I get to look at outside my large office window, right now, I know that you would be as stunned as I am. There is a lot to look forward to this semester, and I can feel a certain buzz in the air that I haven't felt in awhile. :)
Last night I was able to share the gospel with a friend who actually shared it with me a LONG time ago. What a cool experience to be able to lift HER spirits up after she had lifted mine for years. It is amazing how good friends touch our lives the very moment we need them most, whether it be a simple message, a hug, or a concerned phone call...they always seem to pop up RIGHT in the nic-of-time.
Life is good. Life is REALLY good right now. :) School is going extremely well, work is great, and relationships are "blossoming" phaha.

Randomly I get a text tonight that says, "So I had this idea and want to invite you to join with me. For one week starting tomorrow only listen to church music and see if you feel a difference."
I happily accepted this challenge from this dear friend and immediately switched out my music choices.
It is amazing how these "ideas" or challenges come when you desperately need them most.

The words to these songs mean so much to me. I feel blessed to have the friends and family that I do have.
I don't know who the missionaries are that found and baptized my dad, and I am not sure why my mom felt inspired to read the Book of Mormon as a teen...but I will be forever grateful that she did. Thank you to those missionaries that I may never meet, who laid the foundation to who I am today. I don't know you but I thank you and love you.
Also, to the missionaries that came to my home as a kid...thank you. I remember one missionary that was so amazing to me. I don't remember his name, but I remember watching as he played "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx on the piano each time they stopped by to visit and wanted nothing more than to marry someone JUST like him when I was older.
I often plunk that song out on the piano and think of those elders who ate dinner with us often and brought such a sweet spirit into our home.

I went to CO for a quick visit last weekend. It was a blast. :)

My Math phobia is no longer in existence. I focused much of my spare time to practicing and really understanding math, giving it a chance, to prove to myself that it isn't MATH that is bad...I just had some really really bad math teachers.

I really like Math!! :)

I got a new necklace that I am obsessed with!! It is white and gold with diamonds...and it is a Swallow. (bird). When I saw this necklace on the mannequin I was instantly intrigued by it. I couldn't stop starring at it. The closer I got to this necklace the more I "needed" it. After snatching it off the mannequin, and trying it on, I felt like the necklace was made for me.
Okay okay...a little dramatic. Really though, I was in love. Of course I bought it...and I wear it with everything, and it seems to just "work." I looked up the symbolism of a Swallow and it is said to bring wealth. It is also a symbol of loyalty.

Today is the first BYU home game...Goooo Cougarssssss!

On a downer note;
My heart is healing...but it still hurts. I know that is something really bold to write on a public blog...but I am honestly still hurting from my 2008 losses. I am just now realizing this is not something that goes away over night. It isn't something that you just forget about...no matter how angry you are, or were. (...or are).

I love my home, my roommates, my school, my friends, my life. (And of course my family.)
My life here is good, but I feel a change of wind coming very very soon. I am not sure what it is...but EVERY single time in the history of Melinda Blogging that I have said, "There is a change coming..." it is always something massive. The anticipation is killing me...but I am trying to be patient.
These are some good times...but these are also some very hard times. I know I am going to miss this time in my life. Trying to soak it all in and enjoy my twenties. :)

Well, I just got invited to go to the BYU game...soooo it looks like I might need to hurry and get ready for the day!

Wow...

With 13 credits of school and working 40 hour weeks...I am officially exhausted. My days are crazy from 8 am until about 10pm.
I have a lot of updates...I just don't have time to blog about them.
Life is really good right now. I like all of my classes and feel that I can conquer a 4.0 again this semester. We will see!!
K a few quick updates...
Labor Day weekend coming up and I am doing nothing but playing with friends and relaxing in the sun. :)
Still loving my new phone...catching on to the touch screen finally...haha.

Piano lessons are a blast. I feel like a 3 year old learning to play but it has always been a goal of mine, so I know this will do nothing but benefit me...even if I don't end up with an A in the class.

Ummm... making and keeping friends...spending time with them when I can...

Where Did You Come From Where Did You Go...

-So today there was no church due to a temple dedication and I had a lot of extra time on my hands. I decided to go back through my old blogs and see what my goals were last year to be reached before the end of this year...Check out this blog post from Monday, October 6th 2008.

"What is she going to do with her life now?"

GERMANY! I am saving up to travel to Germany to visit some family this year! (maybe bring some friends?) (Check)

CONCERTS! Any and all...I want to live it up this year. (Check)
CAREER! I figured out what my career will be, and I am now putting it into action. (Check)
FAMILY! I want to sit down with my family and find some way to get to know each other better. (Check)
DEBT. (No exclamation point here...) I plan on getting out of debt by spring. (Check- PAID OFF MY CAR and credit cards!!!)
WORK IT! I have been working out a ton. I would love to run a marathon. (Check-still working on the marathon but I am more toned than ever before)
CREATE! Whether it is a beaded necklace or a new company... (Check)
LOVE! I want to find my Prince Charming. Emphasis on Charming. (Check- Not that I found my prince charming...but I have learned to love and trust again!!)

TRAVEL! I already have some pretty fancy plans for a Thanksgiving on the beach this year...but I hope to get out every other month to a new place I have never been before. (Check)
PRAISE! I will be growing closer to God through all of these experiences. (Check)
FRIENDS! My goal is to grow closer to all of my friends and have spiritual and fun moments with them. No shallow conversations. I have also been QUITE bold lately in making new friends. More people to learn something great from. (Check)
LEARN AND LISTEN!! I am working on being a better listener, and taking advice from people who care about me. I have been practicing meditation and mind exercises to expand my attention span. (Check)
SO many things to do in so little time!!

K so basically I accomplished each of these goals!! I actually WENT to Germany when at the time I wrote this I had NO idea how I would get there...I just knew I needed to go.
I thought it would take me until October 2009 to accomplish these goals and I covered them by July. Creating goal lists, to me, is like making a Christmas list. "Who do I want to become...I get to choose! What do I want to do? I get to choose!" It is like sitting down and thinking, "I can have whatever I want from life...what few things do I want to ask for this year...what few things can I set my mind to?"
I am going to NOW set another goal list for next year.

Grades- I want to keep up my 4.0 next semester. This is a high goal but I believe I can do it.
Strength-I will continue to tone and strengthen my body.
Travel- I want to travel more this year. Seattle, Canada, and Oklahoma are on my list of places to go.
Love- I will love to the best of my abilities and trust in God that my prince is getting ready for me as I am getting ready to meet him.
Safety- No more texting or talking on the phone while driving.
Painting- I LOVE painting. I will set aside more time to sit down and paint.
Deutsch- I will continue to strengthen the family relationships that I created while in Germany and continue to learn the German language so that I can better communicate with them.
Let go- I have a really hard time letting go of the past and I want to box up the bad parts of my past and let them go for good. I have come so far from where I was at this time last year, emotionally, spiritually, and mentally.
Service- I will participate in a major service event this year. I will know when the right opportunity arises.
Calling- I will ask for a calling and fulfill it to the best of my abilities.
Piano or Guitar- I will broaden my musical abilities.
Politics- I will participate in political events, and try to better understand politics in general. This is a weak area for me.
Math phobia- I will overcome my math phobia and become excited about obtaining mathematical skills once and for all.
Financial Security- I am going to build up my savings account and food storage this year now that my debts have been paid off.
Knee high boots- I have always wanted knee high riding boots and I am going to finally buck up and buy them this year.
Learn to swim and CPR- I will learn how to swim better and I want to become CPR certified.
Family Prayer- Maybe it will be at Christmas or Thanksgiving...but I want to pray with my entire family...all together at once.
Sell it- I have it, and I love it, but I can't keep it, and must sell it.

K I think that is my list!! This year I did so many things that I have ALWAYS wanted to do that should be documented.

German Lessons and Another Married Friend

Things are going unbelievably well these days. Here are a few updates.

1.With my work promotion I got a new Blackberry Storm so that I can email my new clients. :) I love it...even though it can be temperamental at times.

2.I have been spending a lot of time with my best friends lately...nothing like good friends to bring peace into your life.

3.Dan gets back from WY this week...finally. I am counting down the hours until his return. ;) I got the sweetest piece of mail last week including a long letter and a painting from Wyoming... I don't think I have smiled so big in a very long time.

I got my hair done this week and it is newer and cuter than I have had it in a very long time. Very blond though!

4.My body is finally looking sculpted!! I wore a bikini last week and actually felt cute wearing it. After a month of intense working out I am feeling good and healthy again.

5.I wrote 2 new songs on my guitar. One is called "Ivy" and the other doesn't have a title yet but...it is coming together. I LOVE the blisters that have formed on my fingertips again!!!

Dan and his best friend are sooo talented. Here is one of his songs called "We'll Never Know." The song actually reminds me of our rafting trip last weekend. We had DJ there by the campfire to serenade us. :))

At 5k a ticket...we felt pretty special to be in attendance at the very private National Republican Congressional Committee meeting last night in Park City. We were fed by an outstanding Chef, serenaded by American Idol Carmen Rassmusen (I also hung out with American Idol, Jackie Tohn, a few months ago...Utah loves American Idols!) and we got to meet some pretty important people. I may not be big into politics...but dipping my toes into this pool was most definitely a great opportunity and something that I would consider diving into in the future.

For once in my life...I have nothing new to report. Life is busy and really really good. This smile just wont go away. Most of my friends have found love this summer and many of them will be getting married in the next month or two. I wonder what it is about summer that makes you want to fall in love?
I have been enjoying these last few weeks of summer and living it up here in the valley. Peace is SUCH a great feeling.
There will be some fun pictures coming as of NEXT weekend...but as for now...I am headed to the pool.

Ready To Run

It is always best to say what you need to say. Sometimes we have to make ourselves a bit vulnerable and wear our hearts on our sleeves to accomplish great things in love. ♥ As scary as it may be...
I love to work out. In fact, I love the way my muscles ache after an intense trip to the gym. Normally I get going on the treadmill at a level 7 which is a pretty fast run. I then do a high incline jog for the last 5-10 minutes and lower the incline back down to zero to cool down.
I have been into working-out and running since I was a fetus. My mom teases me that I kick-boxed inside of her tummy and ran everywhere I went the moment my feet hit the floor on my own.
So basically...the moment my little brain gained a knowledge of this whole "walking" thing...I was trying to figure out how to run.
Time and time again people are telling me to slow down, take a breath, take a seat, stop analyzing, stop thinking, start sleeping. It isn't until this last year that I have begun to listen.
The idea of running didn't just appeal to me in the physical manner. I somehow gained the unhealthy ability to escape situations that I wasn't comfortable in by bailing out. If someone was hurting me, not being nice to me, lying to me, or not being true to themselves...I couldn't handle it and I would either take 10 steps back...or run for the hills.
As a teenager this method works for the most part. (Right??)
It works until it becomes a habit, and for me, it did.
This habit has worked to my advantage in recent years. I have been in relationships where years and years go by...and I can't seem to break things off. Some relationships, on the other hand, needed to be walked, if not run, away from and I was able to do it with out shedding a tear. (Okay...maybe a few.)

I know there has to be a point to all of this. Why the kick boxing fetus? Why the faith? Why the ability to separate emotions from trials to overcome the worst of odds?
I have been given some kind of gift that falls under the theme of running. This gift can be useful at times but it can also be extremely...not useful.
What about when I do fall in love? Will I run away from the real thing? From the Prince Charming that God has in store for me?
My mom use to say, "Melinda...go run from that side of the yard to THAT side of the yard as FAST as you can!" During my job as a nanny I found myself saying the words, "K sweetie! Run from this side of the yard to that side! See if you can do it before I count to ten!!"
I realize...
I was one hyped up kid. (uhhh sorry Mom!) I have always had a lot of energy.
This year I decided to take all of that energy and direct it in the most positive ways possible.
One way has been to tell the people I love...that I love them. Also, to let them know why I love them. I know that my family and friends don't have time to read my forever long blog posts...but I would rather have it here for those who do have a moment to read so that they never have a doubt how much I think about them and love them to pieces.
I can't wait to have kids of my own, but first comes love...THEN comes marriage...and THEN comes the baby, right?
The main lesson I learned this year...is to stop running away from people and from situations.
As scary as that situation in Payson canyon was...I am SO proud of myself for not running down the canyon away from those men. I stood there...facing them, building up as much strength inside of me as I could and waited for the perfect moment to bold TOWARDS them and get in the car.
I feel like I am learning to face fear and strike hard. One hard hit.
So...how do I know that I have the strength inside of me to make that cartoon "POW" explosion where all darkness vanishes into thin air?
It is called... knowing God. I KNOW that he was there with me in Payson canyon whispering in my ear, "wait...wait...don't run away" as I faced them with the strength to potentially fight.
I suppose I need to have the same knowledge when I am doubting my relationships. (And current anxiety causing situations.) God is that big cartoon "BANG" that makes all of the bad things go away...or at least not seem so bad and scary.
Loosing loved ones, loss of income, death, and bad memories are some of the worries that keep me up at night.
What if I fall in love with someone...and then loose them?
What if I loose my job right now?
What if I were to have died...?
What if I hadn't...?
These are the moments where I typically run away. I disconnect.

Learning to lean on God and throw the "Bom" "Pow" "Poof" aka "FAITH" at these things is where I find solace and a lessened desire, no matter how tempted the little girl inside of me may be, to run and hide.

A Night With Jon Schmidt

My piano tutor/friend Beau had two tickets to Jon Schmidt last night that he offered to my friend and I. What a wonderful experience this was for us. I have dreamed of attending a Jon Schmidt concert since I was 17 years old. He helps me get through tough homework assignments, writing blocks, emotional days, and his music inspires me to learn something new.
My friend Brian was the first person to introduce me to Jon's music. He could play "Waterfall" SO well!! I tried to learn the piano then...but never had the time to practice.
I made a goal this year to go to Germany, meet my family, and to begin piano lessons.
This is my 4th piano concert in 2 months...and I am officially mentally prepared to begin piano lessons in the fall.
I promise myself...that I will put my whole heart into learning the piano. I want to do this for the 8 year old girl inside of me who sat back and watched the missionaries teach my parents and one missionary would always play, "Right Here Waiting For You," by Bryan Adams, after the lessons.
I swore that I would marry someone just like that missionary...someone who could FEEL music...and become inspired through music as I am.
I am SO excited to begin lessons!!! Maybe someday I will put a YouTube video up of myself playing one of Jon's songs. My goal is to play "Waterfall" perfectly as some point in my life. :)
How about I set a goal right now with you guys...I will play Waterfall before my 30th birthday, from beginning to end.
Done deal!
Make sure and hold me to that!! I will be holding myself to that.

Make goals...and DO THEM!! Life is too short to wait for golden opportunities. We are the ones who hold the keys. We are the ones who have the control. If you want to learn the guitar...GO SIGN UP FOR LESSONS!! TODAY!!
If your goal is to be a great mom, wife, and friend...I admire this and strive for this over any other goal I have set for myself.

PROVO — The three-day search for the body of a 25-year-old Brigham Young University student came to end Tuesday after the man's father was able to point rescuers in the right direction.

Around 9:43 a.m. Tuesday, a search and rescue helicopter passed over an area one mile south and one mile west of Utah State Park Marina and spotted the body of Craig Decker, of West Jordan, just as it floated to the surface, said Utah County Sheriff's Sgt. Spencer Cannon.

Decker, a BYU student majoring in bioengineering, was sailing on a 14-foot catamaran with his parents, Lyle and Marie Decker, Saturday evening when he stepped off the boat to recover an oar. Craig Decker disappeared into the 3-foot-high waves, and didn't resurface, Lyle Decker said.

Search and rescue crews from various departments searched a 4-square-wide mile area for Craig Decker's body, but to no avail. Then, Lyle Decker accompanied searchers on a boat Tuesday evening — around the same time of day his son disappeared, and he was able to lead them back to the general area where his son disappeared.

"Some things really gelled," he said.

Lyle Decker said he and his wife were in a frantic state of mind Saturday night after their son didn't resurface so they couldn't remember where their boat was when the tragedy happened.

"Memories, when you're in a crisis, get kind of in a jumble," he said.

After the helicopter spotted Craig Decker's body, which surfaced in the general area of the Saturday disappearance, it was pulled from the water and taken to the medical examiner for an autopsy, Cannon said. He also said authorities are still uncertain what caused Craig Decker to drown.

"There's no telling that now," he said.

Cannon said the Deckers expressed relief when their son was found.

"There were tears, but there wasn't a sense of despair," he said. "They've worked their way through it as well as any one I've ever seen."

Lyle Decker said his family appreciates the different agencies and volunteers who searched for their son. He also commended them for their efforts.

"We hope none of you have to endure a similar situation," he said. "But, if you do, you're in good hands."

Lyle Decker said his son was a determined young man who was fixed on living his life to the fullest after he lost his right hand when a Mexican firework exploded as he was holding it on New Year's Eve 2006. Craig Decker learned to adjust to life without a limb and posted several tutorials on YouTube, under the screen name "captaindanger384," teaching others how to type on a keyboard, tie shoelaces or open jars with one hand.

"Challenges make us stronger and better," Decker wrote on his YouTube profile. "With creativity and patience, we are capable of much more than we ever imagined."

Decker's sphere of influence reached farther than his parents imagined. Sean McHugh, 44, of Catasauqua, Pa. — a friend of Decker who inspired him to post instructional videos on YouTube — said he attended an Amputee Coalition of America convention a while ago, and several people talked to him about Decker's videos. They said they hoped to bring Decker out to a convention to speak to fellow amputee survivors.

"They were very impressed for how well he was doing," McHugh said.

Abe Niederhauser — a longtime friend — said Decker was an outstanding individual who was never down on life, even after he lost his hand in the accident.

"I was probably more devastated about it than he was," Niederhauser said.

Decker's sister, Emily, said her brother was an energetic individual who often did things just to show people he was still capable, such as driving a stick shift with his hook prosthetic.

Decker's girlfriend, Jenae Walker, said he drove a stick-shift car on the night of their first date. She also said he still liked to light off fireworks.

"He still thought they were cool," she smiled faintly.

The family is glad to have recovered the body, Lyle Decker said, but they don't like to think they've reached "closure."

"Our love continues," he said. "There's nothing to close. He's just visiting somewhere else for a while."

Check out Craig on YouTube. Craig was a great friend to us and I think about him often. We learned of Craig's dissapearance when we returned from a 4th of July camping trip last year. I remember falling onto my bed...unable to hold back my tears. "God, please let them find him!" I cried for a few hours. I was in complete shock. I had never had a close friend suddenly die like this before. One minute he was sitting with me in the break room at work talking about life, love, and the meaning behind it all...and the next...he is on the news as, "Missing BYU student." Craigs brother immediatly emailed me when they found his body. While driving around town I couldn't bare to look over at the lake while he was missing. I became obsessed with thoughts of, "I can go help, I want to find him. I'll go find him...he is okay, this is a mistake...not Craig."
I am still in disbelief that someone so great could be taken away from this earth with the snap of a finger. It really throws life into perspective.
Craig did it the right way. Optimism. He was always looking up...even after his hand was blown to shreds...he kept a smile on his face.

He never let me pass his side without a smile and warm hello, high five, or positive thought for the day.

I haven't always been left handed. In fact, I still get weirded out when I look down at the stub where my right hand used to be! Christmas vacation last year took me on a road trip to Mexico. Question: Where can you buy better quality fireworks than in Mexico? (Answer: ANYWHERE!) On New Year's Eve I lit a harmless looking firework at midnight, and a moment later I looked down and realized that my hand took the early bus back to heaven!

All joking aside, I have learned some powerful lessons through that experience. (Surprisingly, most of them have very little to do with firework safety!) Although what occurred was tragic, I believe what I have learned has made me a better person and will continue to bless the lives of many people.

1. Don't buy fireworks in Mexico!

2. There are some things in life that we simply cannot control. (If I hadn't blown off my hand, some other poor sap would have!) It's okay. As we let go of those things quickly and completely, we become free.

3. "Men are that they might have joy"! Life is good. Laughter heals. Life is funny. There are funny things that happen every day even in the worst of situations. Bad days make good stories. There is a time to laugh and a time to cry. It's funny that laughter and tears come together so easily.

4. The atonement of Christ brings peace and healing "that surpass all understanding". We come to know ourselves and we come to know God through our trials. We are surrounded by miracles. When we trade self pity for humility, our eyes are opened to see them.

5. There is so much life to live! Why waste time worrying and stressing about inconsequential things? Spend time doing what matters most—the things that bring the most light and joy to life. Enjoy the ride.

6. Challenges make us stronger and better. With creativity and patience, we are capable of much more than we ever imagined. Our perspective determines our reality. (There is nothing that quite compares with the feeling of accomplishment gained from tying your shoes with one hand for the first time!)

7. We can always lift others, no matter how bad of a situation we are in. It is a divine gift. The only true and lasting joy comes from forgetting ourselves and helping those around us.

Today when I got home from work I made a new decision and goal for myself. I want to be on the internet and phone less. I need more time by myself or with the people I love. I cannot remember checking my email more than once a week before facebook and myspace came around...and now I am online the majority of my days with my work and personal social networking. There are so many things I want to do this summer...and sitting here blogging and playing on facebook isn't one of them.

A Fathers Day Adventure

Dan made a surprise trip home for the weekend. I was pretty much jumping up and down when he told me he was 12 minutes away from the city. We spent the day with his family and best buddy. My favorite moment...was sitting and rocking on the back porch swing with Dan while making Fathers Day cards. Here are a few pics from the hike...

We went for a hike on Sunday after church and a great Sunday dinner thanks to his mamma.

The 4 of us had a blast climbing around. My poor little white shoes got kinda dirty...but whatever. So worth it. I am just glad I brought a change of clothes after church!!

10 Positive things about today.

Spring is my favorite season...and it is absolutely beautiful here right now. mmm!
I am one year older and wiser too.
My family and friends are all happy and healthy.
I have a testimony and I shared it yesterday.
I got new makeup from Nordstrom that makes my skin look baby soft and smooth.

Work is going great. Things are looking up.
